TARANAKI IWI TRUST
Taranaki Iwi Trust (“Trust”) was established by way of a Deed of Trust which was adopted on 3 September 2006 by Nga Uri o Taranaki Iwi (Taranaki Iwi descendants).
The predecessor to the Trust, Te Runanga O Taranaki Iwi Incorporated (“Runanga”) established the Trust as the Mandated Iwi Organisation (“MIO”) for Taranaki Iwi under the Maori Fisheries Act 2004. In 2006, Nga Uri o Taranaki Iwi agreed to mandate the Trust as the MIO for Taranaki Iwi. Taranaki Iwi was the first Iwi in the country to get a 100% approval from those uri who participated in the vote. Subsequently, at the 2007 AGM of the Runanga, it was agreed to formally disestablish the Runanga and to have just one governing body for the iwi – the Trust.
Since 2006, the Trust has been the mandated body to speak on matters affecting the collective interest of Nga Uri o Taranaki Iwi. The Trust has certain political, social, cultural and economic responsibilities in addition to the asset management and distribution responsibilities brought about by the Fisheries settlement. Annual elections are held in accordance with the terms of the Trust Deed and there are a total of seven Trustees, each elected for a term of 3 years by Nga Uri o Taranaki Iwi who are registered with the Trust.
In late 2009, the Trust sought a mandate from Nga Uri o Taranaki Iwi to enter into settlement negotiations with the Crown for historical Treaty of Waitangi claims. This mandate was received and the Trust’s Deed of Mandate was formally recognised in February 2010. On 17 March 2010, the Trust signed Terms of Negotiation with the Crown at Puniho Pa and the Trust recently signed a Letter of Agreement with the Crown on 22 December 2012.
The Trust continues to develop its capability to provide support to Nga Uri o Taranaki Iwi on political, social, cultural, economic and environmental kaupapa – specifically as Taranaki Iwi enters into a new phase of development post-Treaty Settlement.
