Taranaki Tū Mai 2025

Every two years, the eight iwi of Taranaki gather to celebrate and compete in the festival known as Taranaki Tū Mai. This event is a celebration of unity, honouring the past, present, and future of Taranaki maunga uri. At the center of the festival are three core values that guide the kaupapa:

  • Taranakitanga – Our identity as uri of Taranaki maunga
  • Whakawhanaungatanga – The relationships and connections that bind us
  • Kotahitanga – The collective strength that brings us together

The festival is built around three main pillars:

  • Hākinakina – Sports
  • Wānanga – Knowledge sharing and learning
  • Kapa Haka – Performing Arts

Each pillar features a range of activities where iwi compete at an inter-iwi level. Points are awarded across all events, culminating in overall placings.

Taranaki Iwi will host the ninth cycle of Taranaki Tū Mai in Ōpunakē from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 November. The festival, which began as a grassroots initiative, has evolved into a significant regional event, with over 5,000 uri of Taranaki Maunga expected this year.

Para Kore – Our Zero Waste Commitment
Our goal is a 90% zero waste Taranaki Tū Mai, restoring harmony between people and the taiao (environment).
Sustainable Taranaki have been engaged to provide waste stations at all venues, with volunteers available to help sort para (waste). Working collaboratively with providers, venues, stallholders, and the hāngi team to follow sustainable packaging guidelines.
